Transforming a Bare Venue Into a Bold Experience: Event Design at the Bend Armory

Designing From a Blank Canvas in Bend, Oregon

Some event spaces arrive with built-in character. The Bend Armory… is not one of them, unfortunately the National Gaurd building has not been updated since 1993 and the gym looked like one from an old elementary school. And that’s exactly why designing a full event environment there was one of my favorite creative challenges this year.

Situated in the Old Mill District, the Bend Armory is a massive, underutilized space with endless potential but zero natural atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where transformation doesn’t happen accidentally — it happens through intentional design, bold imagination, and the right combination of event rentals, lighting, décor, and spatial planning.

Last month, I partnered with a local non-profit to create a fundraiser experience that felt warm, elevated, and memorable — a true “scene with soul” inside a venue that starts as pure concrete and shadows. Non-profit event design in Bend is achievable when you have Cheerful in your corner!

The Creative Challenge: Turning “Nothing” Into Something Spectacular

Designing for a venue like the Bend Armory is both incredibly fun and incredibly demanding.
With no architectural features, no built-in ambiance, and lighting that can only be described as “grade school PE class,” you truly begin with nothing but possibility.

This is where the heart of event design steps forward:

  • Custom lounge vignettes to carve out personality and provide comfort, enticing conversation
  • Tall draping along walls to cover the stark white and break up the echoing concrete space
  • Centerpieces, ambient lighting, and production lighting to warm the room and make you want to stay a while
  • Color, texture, and staging elements that guide how guests move and interact, character for a vibe to remember
  • Focal points like a video wall to display sponsorship logos, play videos, backdrop for live bands
  • Thoughtful flow planning to make an oversized room feel intimate and intentional

We didn’t just fill a room — we designed a feeling.

transforming the Bend Armory from drab to fab for a non-profit event space

Event Rentals + Lighting = True Transformation

One of the biggest opportunities in the Bend Armory is lighting.
Because the space is neutral, the lighting design becomes the paintbrush.

Using a combination of:

  • accent uplighting,
  • ambient glowing centerpieces,
  • LED trees for a backdrop in lounge zones,
  • and production-grade fixtures for stage moments,

…the room shifted from “functional gymnasium” to an immersive experience tailored to the non-profit’s mission.

Our coordinating lounge rentals brought layers of comfort and style to soften the hard surfaces, while color-driven décor helped create contrast and depth. Every piece — from sofas to backdrops — served both a functional purpose and a storytelling one. The pairing of LED marquee letters from Stellar Marquees Bend helped this non-profit event design in Bend too!

Partnering With Flip Flop Sounds for Full-Scale Event Production

For a transformation like this, design alone isn’t enough.
It requires strong production support to bring the vision to life.

That’s why I partnered with the team at Flip Flop Productions, Bend’s go-to for:

  • professional lighting
  • staging
  • audio
  • truss
  • video support
  • full event production

They handled the heavy technical side while I focused on design, rentals, layout, and guest experience. Together, we created a fully integrated environment where décor and production worked hand-in-hand.

If your next event needs lighting, staging, or full production support, check them out for sure! They make my work shine — literally.

Why Design Matters for Non-Profit Events

A beautifully designed space doesn’t just look good — it performs.
For non-profits, the environment helps:

  • improve guest engagement
  • elevate the perceived value of the organization
  • support storytelling
  • inspire generosity

When guests feel welcomed, inspired, and connected, they give more freely.
The Swing for King Community Gala was proof of that.

From Bend Armory to Any Blank Space — We Create Scenes With Soul

Whether you’re hosting a fundraiser, corporate event, wedding, or activation, a blank venue is not a drawback — it’s an opportunity for full creative expression.

With event rentals, bold design, and layered lighting, we can take the plainest venue and turn it into something unforgettable.

Need help designing your next event in Central Oregon?
Let’s create a scene worth remembering. Design you next event.

How to Turn Any Venue into an Instagram Moment

Let’s face it — not every event venue starts out as a stunner. Have you seen some of the options we have here in Central Oregon? Some are blank canvases (ahem, barns and community halls), others are… let’s say “full of potential.” But with the right mix of style, furniture, and lighting, you can turn literally any venue into an Instagram-worthy moment.

That’s what we do best here at Cheerful Event Rentals — build scenes with soul that make your guests stop, snap, and swoon.

Photo loaction: https://www.uufco.org

Step One: Pick an Anchor Piece

Every great scene starts with a star of the show.
Maybe it’s a mustard-yellow velvet sofa, a mid-century loveseat, or that one chandelier that demands its own spotlight.

Your anchor piece sets the tone — it’s the visual cue that tells guests this isn’t your average event.
Once you’ve chosen it, everything else should support that vibe — pillows, rugs, lighting, even your glassware if you want to go full-tilt.

Step Two: Build a Story (Not Just a Setup)

Anyone can throw a couch and a rug together. The magic happens when you design a scene that tells a story.

Think “Desert Boho Lounge,” “Retro Romance,” or “Gatsby-Goes-to-Bend.”
You’re not decorating — you’re storyboarding. Think of it the physical form of Pinterest.

Add a statement chair, layer textures, bring in plants or candles, and suddenly your guests aren’t just sitting — they’re experiencing the event.

Step Three: Layer the Lighting

Lighting can make or break your entire aesthetic.
That same vignette under fluorescent lights? Tragic.
But hit it with warm ambient glow or hang a cheerful chandelier, and suddenly you’re in a Pinterest fever dream.

At Cheerful, we love using ambient floor lighting to create pockets of atmosphere, string lights to define zones, and statement fixtures to pull focus.
Good lighting isn’t decoration — it’s design.

Step Four: Add the Unexpected

The most-photographed corners are always the ones with a twist.

Try mixing eras — a vintage couch under a modern chandelier.
Or bring the outdoors in — wildflowers spilling out of old trunks, rattan mixed with velvet.
The key? Personality. You want guests to feel like they’ve discovered a secret spot built just for them.

Step Five: Invite the Camera

Once your scene is styled, it’s time to let it shine.
Encourage your guests (or clients!) to use your vignette as a backdrop. Add a playful sign or floral arch.
You don’t need to scream “photo op” — the space should speak for itself.

When design feels intentional, it naturally becomes shareable.

Bonus Tip: Use Your Space Wisely

Even if your venue isn’t picture-perfect, you can frame your best angles.
Position vignettes where lighting feels soft and natural — near windows, under string lights, or beneath your signature chandelier glow.
And always remember: clutter kills creativity (I should remember this for my own house rules!). Keep the space focused and cohesive.

From Blank to Bold

Whether it’s a vineyard, a barn, or a backyard, every venue has the potential to transform into something spectacular.
With the right furniture, lighting, and imagination, you can create the kind of scene people remember — and re-post.

At Cheerful Event Rentals, we collaborate with Flip Flop Productions to bring you podiums, uplighting and LED dancefloors, we live for the color, the comfort, and the chaos of styling events that feel alive.
You bring the vision; we’ll bring the vibe.

Why Wedding Scenic Event Rentals Are the Secret Sauce for Unforgettable “I Do’s”

Instagram-worthy wedding rentals, custom wedding scenery and sweethearts tables, hanging chandeliers

Wedding Scenic Event Rentals in Central Oregon: Backdrops, Lounges & Scenes with Soul

Planning your wedding in Central Oregon? Let’s be honest—you’re not here for beige chairs and wrinkled backdrops. You’re here for style, soul, and unforgettable experiences. That’s where wedding scenic event rentals come in. Did you know that ;scenic’ is the terminolgy for soft seating and decor rentals on the East Coast? Let’s bring it here to the Westside of the US. They’re not just décor—they’re the secret ingredient to creating scenes that feel as good as they look.

Backdrops That Steal the Spotlight

Think arches dripping with personality, photo walls that pop, and curated vignettes that scream this was made for Instagram. A backdrop isn’t just décor—it’s the stage for your vows, your first kiss, and your forever photos. Your cake eating too!

Lounges with Style and Seating That Slays

Your guests deserve more than just bulk folding chairs. With wedding lounge rentals, you create stylish seating that’s both comfortable and chic. Picture velvet sofas, cozy loveseats, and perfectly paired chairs—spaces that invite guests to sip, mingle, and snap photos in total comfort. So what if you have to talk to one more vendor, it’s worth the extra step.

Color-Coordinated Scenes That Wow

Why risk a mismatched look when you can coordinate every piece to your wedding palette? Scenic rentals make your Pinterest dreams real—whether it’s moody boho, jewel tones against the Cascades, or a modern minimal vibe. Cohesion = instant elegance.

Weddings as Experiences, Not Just Events

Today’s weddings are all about immersion. Scenic rentals transform your day into an experience—one where guests feel transported into your story. From ceremony to after-party, these curated details turn your wedding into something unforgettable.

Final Word: Create a Commotion

Let’s not sugarcoat it: weddings today are less about stiff traditions and more about creating an experience. Your guests want to feel transported, like they’ve stepped into a scene designed just for you. WE CAN DO THAT! Scenic rentals are how you build that atmosphere—from the altar to the after-party. It’s stylish, it’s intentional, and it’s the difference between a forgettable reception and a night your friends won’t shut up about for years.

Cheers!

Don’t Be Beige: How to Express Personal Style in Your Home

You don’t have to be neutral or buy everything new, either! Here’s some affordable interior design tips Central Oregon!

Let’s have a little design intervention, shall we?

If your living room is starting to feel more like a waiting room—and not in a cool, boutique-hotel-lobby kind of way—you might be suffering from a very real Central Oregon epidemic: beige fatigue.

Now, I’m not saying beige is banned. But your home should feel like you, not like a catalog. Personal style in interior design isn’t just for people with big budgets and Pinterest-perfect homes. It’s for everyone—especially those of us who live for that grand “reveal day” moment.

Here at Cheerful Redesign, we believe that a well-loved space should have a little soul, a little weird, and a whole lot of you.

Your Style Is Your Superpower

Interior design isn’t about copying what’s trending (though, yes, mushroom-shaped lamps are still cute). It’s about creating spaces that reflect who you are. Whether you’re an off-the-grid adventurer from Tumalo, a creative soul in Sisters, or a high-desert maximalist with a house full of plants and vintage treasures—you get to write the rules.

And no, your personality isn’t beige. So your furniture shouldn’t be either.

Let’s talk about how to shake off that neutral-numbness and start injecting some personal style into your home.

3 Affordable Decor Hacks That Pack Personality

1. Thrift Like a Pro

Central Oregon is a goldmine for secondhand gems. From Redmond to Bend, local thrift shops and estate sales are brimming with one-of-a-kind pieces. Want to add personality? Skip the mass-produced art and go for a vintage mirror, a funky lamp, or even a colorful ceramic ashtray (you don’t have to smoke—just use it for earrings or snacks!). Scour Facebook marketplace for unique pieces or try the ol’ fallback of Craigslist!

Hot Tip: If it makes you smile, buy it. Not everything has to match. We’re curating vibes here, not showroom sets. Use things different than their intended purpose like turning a basket into a lampshade for a swag lamp, or a fresh coat of paint goes a long way for old jars and vases! Check out this Instagram Post for a visual aid, ironically, I went beige!

2. Paint One Weird Thing

You don’t need to paint a whole wall to make a statement. Just paint something—a dresser, a stool, a frame, your fireplace mantel. Pick a bold color. (Yes, I said bold—Sage green is lovely, but let’s talk tangerine, periwinkle, or high-gloss oxblood.)

You’ll be shocked how one unexpected pop changes everything. Instant “scene with soul.”

3. Shop Your House

You’d be amazed how different your space feels when you swap items from room to room. That vase in the kitchen might be just right on your nightstand. Stack some books. Add a scarf as a table runner. Take a “what if” approach.

Think of it as staging… but for your own joy. (And staging is one of my specialties, FYI.)

Your Home, But Make It You

You don’t have to go full maximalist or paint your ceiling magenta (unless you want to—do you). But I’m here to give you permission to step outside your safe zone. Mix the vintage with the modern. Embrace quirky shapes. Layer in color. Create a commotion—in the best way possible.

📸 Here’s a little corner I designed that tells a story:

That leather chair? A Pier One find. The globe art? I made it from a poster, clock frame and iron. And yes, those stacked vintage suitcases double as side tables, sourced from a local antique store. This is how we do personal style in Central Oregon—with character, soul, and a healthy dose of “I like the weird.”

Let’s Redesign Something Together

If you’re ready to kick beige fatigue to the curb but aren’t sure where to start, Cheerful Redesign offers budget-friendly interior design services that are anything but boring. I’ll work with what you already have, thrift like a local, and make sure your personality is what shines.

We live for the moments—and the grand reveal.

The Importance of Physical Home Staging

In the competitive real estate market of Central Oregon, first impressions are everything. When potential buyers step into a home, they are not just looking at the walls and floors; they are envisioning their future life in that space. This is where the importance of physical home staging comes into play. While virtual staging has gained popularity, there are compelling reasons why physical staging remains an essential strategy for sellers looking to make a lasting impact.

The Power of First Impressions

The moment a buyer walks into a home, their initial reaction can set the tone for the entire viewing experience. A well-staged home creates an inviting atmosphere, allowing buyers to see the full potential of the space. It highlights the property’s best features and helps buyers visualize how they can utilize each room. In contrast, an empty home can leave potential buyers feeling indifferent or even disappointed! An empty space can feel cold and uninviting, making it challenging for buyers to imagine their lives unfolding within those walls.

The Emotional Connection

Physical home staging goes beyond mere aesthetics; it taps into the emotional aspect of home buying. When a space is beautifully staged, it tells a story—one that potential buyers can connect with. A staged home can evoke feelings of comfort, warmth, and happiness, making it easier for buyers to envision themselves living there. In a market like Central Oregon’s, where outdoor lifestyles and community living are highly valued, staging can highlight features such as entertaining, cozy reading nooks, inviting conversation areas, and family or pet-friendly spaces.

Virtual Staging vs. Physical Staging: The Disappointment Factor

While virtual staging can be a cost-effective solution, it often lacks the depth and character that physical staging provides. Although virtual staging may seem appealing due to its lower cost, the reality is that the overall quality and impact of physical staging far outweigh the cheaper alternative. Physical staging involves significant investment in stock and labor, which translates to carefully curated furniture, decor, and layout that enhance the property’s unique character.

With the rise of virtual staging, many homes end up looking similar, as they rely on stock images and generic designs that fail to showcase the individuality of each property. This results in a homogenized appearance where every staged home looks like the next, lacking the unique touches that make a house feel like a home. Buyers may find themselves disappointed when they visit a property that appears empty or stark in person after being enticed by beautifully rendered photos online. The disconnect between virtual representations and real-life experiences can lead to mistrust and a sense of letdown.

Moreover, physical staging allows potential buyers to engage with the space in a way that virtual staging simply CANNOT REPLICATE. They can feel the flow of the rooms, experience the scale of the furniture, and truly understand how each area can serve their needs.

The Competitive Edge

In a market as dynamic as Central Oregon’s, standing out is crucial amongst potential home buyers. Homes that are physically staged tend to sell faster and often at higher prices compared to their unstaged counterparts. Real staging can be the differentiator that sets a property apart in a competitive landscape, attracting more potential buyers and increasing the likelihood of a successful sale. The investment in physical staging pays off, as it enhances the home’s appeal and creates an unforgettable viewing experience. People aren’t let down, struggling to visualize the space after seeing pictures online. Think of online dating, you hope that person actually looks like their picture represented online!

Conclusion

In conclusion, physical home staging is an invaluable tool in the Central Oregon real estate market. It creates powerful first impressions, fosters emotional connections, and provides a tangible experience that virtual staging cannot match. Virtual staging is fake, provides a feeling of misconception and distrust. AI tools are already out there, everywhere, misleading us, don’t let infiltrate our home buying experience — each home should showcase their differences, their beauty as it stands. By investing in physical staging, sellers can showcase their homes in the best light, ensuring that potential buyers walk away with excitement and a clear vision of their future in the space. Don’t let your property fall flat—opt for physical staging and make every showing count. The effort and investment are worth the reward, as they lead to a more authentic and compelling presentation of your home.

The Power of Fresh Flowers in Real Estate: Welcoming Buyers in Central Oregon

When it comes to selling your home in Central Oregon, like the beautiful areas of Bend and Redmond, first impressions are everything. As Leah Latham knows, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere can make all the difference in the competitive real estate market. One of the simplest yet most effective strategies for a cheerful design is incorporating fresh flowers into your entryway or kitchen. Of course they’re not the only thing, but it’s a contribution to a positive first impression. Here’s why a vibrant bouquet can enhance your home’s appeal and attract prospective buyers.

1. A Heartfelt Welcome

Imagine potential buyers walking into your home and being greeted by the lively colors and fresh scents of a stunning bouquet. Flowers have a unique ability to evoke feelings of warmth and hospitality. By placing an eye-catching arrangement in your Bend or Redmond entryway, you set a positive tone right from the start, making buyers feel welcomed and at ease in your space.

2. Enhancing Aesthetic Appeal in Bend and Redmond Homes

Fresh flowers add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any home in Central Oregon. Whether it’s a simple vase of local wildflowers or an elaborate arrangement of classic roses and lilies, flowers can elevate your home’s aesthetic appeal. They provide a pop of color that complements your decor and enhances the cheerful redesign of your property. This visual appeal can make your home more memorable and inviting, encouraging buyers to linger longer during showings.

3. Creating a Positive Atmosphere for Prospective Buyers

Research shows that certain scents can influence mood and perception. The natural fragrance of fresh flowers can create a calming and uplifting atmosphere, making your home in Bend or Redmond feel more inviting. A pleasant smell can also mask any lingering odors, ensuring that buyers focus on the beauty of your space rather than any potential negatives.

4. Symbolizing Care and Attention to Detail

Having fresh flowers in your home signals to buyers that you care about your property and have put effort into its presentation. This attention to detail is particularly important in the real estate market of Central Oregon, where buyers are looking for homes that showcase pride of ownership. A cheerful bouquet can reflect this level of care, reassuring buyers about the overall condition of your home. (PS, so do clean air vents and returns, dust those things!)

5. Seasonal Touches to Attract Buyers

Incorporating fresh flowers allows you to bring seasonal touches into your home. Whether it’s spring tulips, summer sunflowers, or autumn chrysanthemums, aligning your floral displays with the seasons can create a dynamic and inviting environment. This strategy not only enhances your home’s appearance but also resonates with buyers who appreciate a well-thought-out design.

Conclusion: Boost Your Home’s Appeal with Fresh Flowers

In the competitive real estate landscape of Central Oregon, particularly in Bend and Redmond, creating an inviting atmosphere is key to attracting potential buyers. As Leah Latham emphasizes, incorporating fresh flowers into your entryway or kitchen can enhance your home’s aesthetic appeal, create a positive atmosphere, and symbolize care and attention to detail. As you prepare to list your home for sale, consider the powerful impact that a cheerful bouquet can have in making your property stand out in the market.

The Joy of a Reveal Day

There’s nothing quite like the moment a client walks into their transformed living room or office for the first time. It’s what I call Reveal Day—and it’s my favorite part of the whole process. That moment when someone gasps (yes, it happens!), screams, or even tears up a little because their space finally feels like them? That’s what I live for.

Interior Design on a Budget in Central Oregon

Whether we’re staging your home to sell, updating your home office, or revamping your living room for a new season, I’m here to make it beautiful, intentional, and budget-conscious.

Sometimes, all it takes is:

  • A bold new paint color (check this color palette out!)
  • Repurposing furniture you already own or finding some old pieces to refurbish
  • Swapping in a few modern decor pieces
  • A fresh layout that changes everything

It’s not about spending more—it’s about seeing your space in a whole new way.

Elevated Elegance: How a Lounge Area with Rental Furniture Transforms Your Central Oregon Wedding

Central Oregon is known for its striking natural beauty—think rugged mountain peaks, high desert vistas, and forested hideaways. With such a breathtaking backdrop, it’s no wonder couples flock here for their weddings. But if you’re looking to go beyond the expected and add a truly memorable touch to your celebration, consider this often-overlooked feature: a custom lounge area created with thoughtfully curated rental furniture.

A lounge area isn’t just a place for guests to sit; it’s a curated experience. Picture plush velvet sofas under string lights, vintage coffee tables atop woven rugs, and accent chairs arranged for effortless conversation. These settings not only offer comfort but invite guests to slow down, connect, and soak in the moment between dances and toasts.

We’re a big destination wedding location and in Central Oregon, where nature provides an awe-inspiring canvas, the right furniture can complement—rather than compete with—the surrounding landscape. Earth-toned upholstery, rustic wood finishes, and organic textures echo the desert sage, pine forests, and lava rock that define the region.

Every wedding tells a story, and a lounge area is a perfect way to infuse personality into your event. Are you drawn to boho chic? Think low-slung poufs, macrame accents, and soft layered textiles. Prefer a more modern aesthetic? Opt for clean-lined seating in solid colors with gold or brass accents. Cheerful Redesign offers a wide selection to suit any vision, and many even specialize in creating setups that enhance specific outdoor venues. We love offering design services to pull the images in your thoughts to tailored furnishings on the ground.

Beyond its visual appeal, a lounge area serves multiple practical purposes. It gives older guests a cozy place to rest, offers a stylish backdrop for candid and posed photos, and can even act as a quiet escape for newlyweds to steal a moment together. It’s one of the few décor elements that offers equal parts function and flair.

Creating a lounge experience doesn’t mean purchasing expensive pieces or hauling your own furniture. Central Oregon is home to several boutique rental companies that specialize in wedding lounges, you do not need to bring in companies from surrounding large cities! These vendors handle delivery, setup, and takedown—allowing you to enjoy the day without the logistical stress. Plus, renting gives you access to high-end, on-trend pieces without the commitment or cost of ownership.

Any wedding in Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver and Prineville already promises unforgettable views and magical moments. By adding a styled lounge area with rental furniture, you create an elevated, intimate space that invites your guests to relax, connect, and be fully present in the beauty of the day. It’s a small detail that delivers a big impact—and just might become your favorite part of the celebration.
